The CITE: Good Start to Fall Semester for edX

The fall semester is off to a rousing start for edX.

Harvard University, which teamed with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to found the nonprofit online education start-up last spring, announced that about 100,000 students signed up for its first free online courses on computer science and an adaptation of the Harvard School of Public Health classes in epidemiology and biostatics. Free online offerings at MIT and the University of California Berkeley, which joined the project over the summer, are attracting similar interest, according to edX President Anant Agarwal in an article in The Boston Globe. In fact, MIT attracted 155,000 students for a course in circuits and electronics last spring. The platform uses discussion groups and forums to engage students, who can enroll in as many edX courses they like. Certificates of completion are available to those who show they have mastered the course. ?We view this as an incredible opportunity for us to ask deeper questions about how people learn and how we as a university help people to learn,? Harvard Provost Alan Garber said in The Globe article. More good news for edX followed as Bloomberg reported that the University of Texas, Austin, plans to spend up to $5 million to join the venture. ?The UT System?s partnership with edX is great news for Texas and exactly the type of effort I hope more schools will consider as we aggressively pursue the goals of improving graduation rates and making a college education more accessible and affordable,? said Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the statement announcing the plan.

Chip gear maker ASML to buy Cymer for $2.5 billion

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The world's leading microchip gear maker ASML, is to buy U.S. group Cymer, its key supplier of a light-based technology crucial to making a new generation of much smaller chips, for 1.95 billion euros ($2.5 billion).

The Dutch company said that Cymer would accelerate the development of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) semiconductor lithography, which will produce the chips that will increase power and functionality in future smartphones and tablet computers. The light source in ASML's EUV development plans has been an ongoing technological challenge for ASML, causing delays in production

Over the summer, ASML announced a string of deals with its three biggest customers, including Intel, Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. These will amount to the trio buying a collective 23 percent stake in ASML and supplementing its R&D budget to the tune of 1.38 billion euros.

Cymer and ASML have collaborated closely for more than a year and the acquisition was a natural evolution, ASML said.

The deal, which is due to close in the first half of 2013, is a cash-and-stock transaction. Each Cymer shareholder will receive $20 in cash and 1.1502 ASML ordinary shares per Cymer share. The total price is a premium of 61 percent over Cymer's average volume-weighted price in the 30 days to October 16.

ASML said that the deal is expected to boost earnings per share within two years, though Theodoor Gilissen analyst Jos Versteeg said that ASML is paying a steep price. Rabobank's Philip Scholte, meanwhile, said that it's an expensive way for ASML to get EUV back on track.

A bellwether for Europe's technology sector, ASML made the Cymer announcement as it reported lower than expected third-quarter bookings and said that fourth-quarter sales would be at the low end of expectations. However, it declined to give a 2013 outlook.

Its trading update echoed the downbeat message coming from other technology titans. Intel, one of ASML's biggest customers, said on Tuesday that its outlook remains weak for the remainder of the year because of falling PC sales.

ASML's third-quarter order book came in at 831 million euros, lower than analysts' expectations of 899 million euros.

The company saw weakness at customers who make memory chips because consumers were choosing cheaper versions of smartphones and tablet computers because of the weak economy, Chief Financial Officer Peter Wennink said.

Third-quarter net profit was 275 million euros, compared with a forecast for 278 million euros. Sales of 1.23 billion euros were in line with forecasts.

Petercam analyst Marcel Achterberg said that he expected ASML shares to fall on the news and would recommend buying on this weakness. The shares were down by 2.75 percent at 0827 GMT.

iPhone-Maker: Yes, We Employed 14-Year-Olds - Business Insider

BEIJING (AP) ? The company that manufactures Apple's iPhone said Tuesday it found underage interns as young as 14 working at one of its factories in China.

Foxconn Technology Group said the interns were found by a company investigation at its factory in the eastern city of Yantai and were sent back to their schools. China's minimum legal working age is 16.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., said it was investigating with schools how the interns were sent to its factory. It didn't say how many underage interns it found.

"We recognize that full responsibility for these violations rests with our company and we have apologized to each of the students for our role in this action," Foxconn said in a statement. "Any Foxconn employee found, through our investigation, to be responsible for these violations will have their employment immediately terminated."

Foxconn produces iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc. and also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. The company gave no indication what products were made in facilities where the interns worked.

A labor rights group, China Labor Watch, said in a statement that primary responsibility lay with schools involved but "Foxconn is also culpable for not confirming the ages of their workers."

Conditions in factories in China are a sensitive issue for foreign brands that outsource production of shoes, consumer electronics and other goods to local contractors. Last month, Foxconn suspended production for one day at a factory in the city of Taiyuan following a brawl by as many as 2,000 employees that injured 40 people.

Foxconn is one of China's biggest employers, with about 1.2 million employees in factories in several cities.

The company has an internship program that takes vocational students who work for three to six months in its factories, accompanied by teachers.

Foxconn faced a complaint in August that vocational students were compelled by their schools to work in its factories in China. Foxconn said the students were free to leave at any time.

The Fair Labor Association, which was hired by Apple to audit working conditions at Foxconn factories, said in August that improvements it recommended in March were being carried out ahead of schedule. That included verifying the ages of student interns.

Lewis Hamilton blames suspension failure for struggling in Korean ...

Lewis Hamilton blames suspension failure for struggling in Korean GP ? Formula 1 news

Lewis Hamilton complained about a suspension failure after he had to battle for a tenth place in the Korean Grand Prix this Sunday.

On Saturday, Hamilton had qualified at third position but he was driving at fourth in the opening stint of the race. He was successful at matching his pace with Fernando Alonso of Ferrari in front of him. Hamilton soon fell back as the race proceeded as he encountered a problem with his car.

Hamilton confessed that the problem with his car had been a rear suspension failure similar to the one he had to deal with at Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix. He complained that the particular problem makes the car really difficult to handle and that he had to struggle with it throughout the race. He also shared his concerns with his team who assured him that it was safe for him to drive but it still had been a tough situation.

He was pleased that even though the car had given him a difficult time, he had been able to handle his circumstances really well. He was happy to have been able to score a point despite everything that had gone wrong.

?It was a real test but I just did absolutely everything I could. It wasn't particularly fun; moving backwards and then fighting with the Toro Rosso - a McLaren should never be fighting with a Toro Rosso and it should never be fighting with a Force India - but I put up as strong a fight as I could with Kimi without colliding,? Hamilton said.

He hinted at the fact sometimes it is not about winning but how much effort you put in do better. He insisted that he had done his best.

He said, ?This rules that we're pretty much out of the championship today but sometimes these races show the true spirit within, so I feel quite comfortable with myself that I pushed and I gave it everything.?

His car also got stuck with some Astroturf at the end of the game which caused his car to go even slower but he said it had only highlighted the problem he had been facing.

Hamilton is happy that he held on and was able to finish at tenth.

Austrians proud of skydiver Fearless Felix

VIENNA (AP) ? In tiny Austria, where souvenir shops do brisk business in T-shirts bearing the crossed-out image of a kangaroo, some hope skydiver Felix Baumgartner's record-breaking jump will mean that ? for a while at least ? people will stop confusing their country with Australia.

The daredevil Austrian not only became the first man to shatter the sound barrier without traveling in a jet or spacecraft, he also made the highest jump ever ? a tumbling, death-defying plunge from a gossamer balloon floating in the stratosphere ? before landing safely Sunday in the New Mexico desert.

But the pride felt here in the man known as "Fearless Felix" goes beyond reminding the world that Austria is not Australia. It also resonates on a deeper level in a country whose positive achievements have often been overshadowed by its association with Adolf Hitler.

This nation of less than 9 million people gave birth to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler and Sigmund Freud as well as scores of other Austrians who have left huge footprints across the centuries in music, politics, art and science. Its Alpine lakes and mountain peaks are immortalized in "The Sound of Music," and its famed contemporary human exports include Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hollywood chef Wolfgang Puck.

But Austria is also frequently invoked as the birthplace of the Nazi dictator ? and more recently as the home of Josef Fritzl, the man sentenced three years ago to life in prison for locking his daughter in a basement dungeon for 25 years and fathering her seven children.

Foreign media commentaries back then argued that there must be something inherently evil in a nation that can produce both Hitler and Fritzl, prompting the government to declare that Fritzl's crimes were an "isolated case" that the country could not be held hostage to.

With such associations weighing heavily on their minds, many Austrians were happy Monday for a new local hero swelling the ranks of the nation's good guys.

Vienna resident Mahir Dizdarevic described Baumgartner's stratospheric stunt as "good PR for Austria," adding with a laugh: "Let's hope we won't get mistaken for Australia anymore."

Peter Portugal, a fellow Viennese, also expressed his nation's pride. "He's Austrian, and I'm insanely happy that an Austrian did that," he said. "After all, he broke some records - and they will last for his entire life, my life and Austria's life."

Austria's president and chancellor sent their congratulations and Schwarzenegger tweeted his. Facebook users gleefully suggested that the stratosphere be renamed Baumgartner Heights ? now the name of a Vienna street.

Almost 3 million people ? more than a third of all Austrians ? watched the jump live on TV. It was front-page news on all the dailies, and even hard-bitten newspaper columnists broke with days of questioning the sense of the endeavor, especially whether the reported 50 million euros (nearly $65 million) spent on it could have been better used.

"We need people like Felix Baumgartner, who dare to transcend our boundaries so that we all can look over our own tiny horizons," wrote Wolfgang Fellner, publisher of the mass-circulation daily "Oesterreich."

NY rips off 26 straight in rematch of NFC Championship to win 26-3

Image: New York Giants receiver Victor CruzGetty Images

Victor Cruz?of the?Giants dances after making a six-yard TD catch in the second quarter against the 49ers Sunday in San Francisco.

updated 7:36 p.m. ET Oct. 14, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO - Antrel Rolle and the New York Giants studied Alex Smith so much they practically knew what was coming.

On one play in the third quarter, even running back Ahmad Bradshaw screamed from the sideline: "Trail. He's watching you." Rolle responded, pretended he was playing the ball and sliced in front of Kyle Williams on a short hook.

"He threw the ball right to me," Rolle said.

After a slow start this season, New York's defense saved its best for the 49ers yet again.

Rolle intercepted two passes by Smith, Prince Amukamara picked off another and the Giants shut down San Francisco in a 26-3 victory Sunday in a rematch of last season's NFC championship game.

"I think this is our most complete game all year long," Rolle said.

After outscoring the Bills and Jets by a combined 79-3 the last two weeks, the 49ers (4-2) met their match again. No overtime needed this time, and not much of Eli Manning, either.

Manning threw for 193 yards and one touchdown, Bradshaw ran for 116 yards and a score and New York (4-2) rode that dominant defense and four field goals by Lawrence Tynes to hand outspoken 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh the most lopsided loss of his tenure.

The 49ers had not allowed a 100-yard rusher in previous 22 home games. The last time one was Tennessee's Chris Johnson, who ran for 135 yards on Nov. 8, 2009

What a San Francisco treat.

"We were just waiting for them to play like we know they can play," Manning said of New York's defense. "They played outstanding. They played really well, flying around."

The Giants grinded out a 20-17 overtime win at rain-soaked Candlestick Park on Jan. 22, capitalizing on two fumbles punts by Williams en route to another Super Bowl title over the Patriots. All week, some San Francisco players talked about "unfinished business," and Harbaugh added to the hype when he fired back a strongly worded statement criticizing Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who had said All-Pro defensive end Justin Smith often "gets away with murder" holding linemen.

For all the hoopla, the rematch was never close.

Amukamara's interception in the second quarter started a surge of New York offense. Smith, who wore tape around his sprained middle finger that he said wasn't an issue, lofted the pass too high and allowed Amukamara to leap underneath the ball before tight end Delanie Walker even had a chance at the Giants 33.

At one point in the first half, Manning completed eight consecutive passes for 142 yards and had the usually stout San Francisco defense out of sorts. Domenik Hixon tip-toed the sideline to catch passes of 39 and 16 yards on consecutive third downs, and Victor Cruz followed with a 6-yard touchdown reception and his usual salsa dance in the end zone for a 7-3 lead.

"The statement made," Cruz said, "is that we're here to stay."

Tynes kicked a 34-yard field goal for a 10-3 lead and Tarell Brown blocked a 40-yard attempt by Tynes, which led to David Akers' miss wide left from 52 yards as the half expired.

Akers, who tied the NFL record with a 63-yard field goal in a Week 1 win at Green Bay, also hooked a 43-yarder wide right on San Francisco's first drive. He made a 42-yarder from the same right hash mark. The All-Pro kicker is 11 of 16 this season.

"It wasn't a great day for any of us," Harbaugh said.

Once the break was over, the Giants sent San Francisco spiraling down and out in a New York minute.

David Wilson returned the second-half kickoff 66 yards to set up Bradshaw's 1-yard TD run. That quieted the Candlestick crowd - except for the Giants fans that sprinkled the stands blue on a sun-splashed day along the bay.

On San Francisco's next two possessions, Rolle intercepted Smith's passes. The first came on an overthrown pass intended for former Giant Mario Manningham that Rolle returned 20 yards to the San Francisco 12. On the second, he stepped in front of a pass to Williams and ran 22 yards to the San Francisco 5.

"I could tell, at times, we had him a little rattled," Rolle said.

"It's tough to speak about any other facet," Smith said. "We made it tough on the defense."

The only downside for New York is it settled for field goals both times. Then again, not many points were needed.

The Giants sacked Smith six times and had him under constant pressure, made worse when left tackle Joe Staley left with a concussion in the third quarter. Smith finished 19 of 30 for 200 yards, and the 49ers were held to 80 yards rushing.

"The nice thing was the pounding away of the pencil on the defensive line," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I think the defensive line finally decided they were going to come out and play today and they did."

The 49ers were coming off a 45-3 home romp against Buffalo, racking up a franchise-record 621 yards and becoming the first team in NFL history with 300 yards passing and 300 yards rushing in the same game. This time, they were smashed.

"Coaches always let us know that we're not the kings of the NFL, the Giants are," 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers said. "They won a title last year and they're still that team to beat until somebody wins the Super Bowl."

Obama House Hunting In Hawaii For 2013 | The Tree of Mamre

According to Jerome Corsi, Barack Obama is house hunting in Hawaii, but not for 2016?for 2013, on the presumption that he will lose the election.

As he reports in WND:

Very quietly, Obama?s chief financier, Penny Pritzker, has entered the Hawaii housing market to buy a retirement home for the president and his family that will be available not in 2016, but in January 2013 ?
Pritzker, a wealthy Chicago business executive and heiress to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, served as national finance chairman for Obama?s 2008 campaign and is the co-chairman of his 2012 effort.
The source told WND that highly confidential internal polls conducted by the Obama campaign indicate Obama cannot win re-election, despite public surveys that show him in the lead.
?The public polls are mostly political,? the source argued. ?Obama radicals want Romney supporters to feel discouraged and give up. Truth is that Romney?s winning.? ?
Pritzker?s search for a developed property, suitable for occupancy four months from now, instead of property where a custom-designed estate might be built, is further indication that insiders believe Obama will not be re-elected ?
DuJan at HillBuzz.org has been reporting that Michelle Obama?s mother, Marian Robinson, who is currently living with the Obama family in the White House, has been bragging about moving to Hawaii.
?It was fun while it lasted,? HillBuzz.org quotes Robinson as saying, ?but wait until you see the place they?re buying for Michelle and Barack!?

For what it is worth, this story is nearly a month old (we just became aware of it now), and it predates the recent poll meltdown. As we said a month ago, the polls were bunk, and they are still bunk now?Romney is doing much better than the public thinks. That Obama is hedging his bets by going house hunting shows the truth of this.

Here Comes Charice!

By: Lynn Barker

Charice Pempengco?s story is amazing. She came from a poor background in the Philippines where she learned English from listening to American music. Her mom walked in to find her 4-year-old belting Celine Dion?s ?My Heart Will Go On? from Titanic while standing on the kitchen table.

After participating in countless talent contests in her country, this amazing young singer had almost given up her dream when Ellen Degeneres noticed her popular YouTube video and invited Charice to come to the U.S. for the show. After that, Oprah and on to success with more music and her recurring role on ?Glee?.?

Starting this week, you can catch Charice playing a talented music student in the funny, heart-warming new Kevin James? film Here Comes the Boom. We were excited to get more info from this petite dynamo who called us from her home in L.A.

Kidzworld: Talk about the process of winning the role of Malia in Here Comes the Boom. How was that for you? Did you have to sing to get the part?

  • Charice: I thought I was just going to read the script and act. All of a sudden they gave me lyrics of a song (?Holly Holy? originally by Neil Diamond) and I didn?t know the song. I was like ?What am I gonna do now??. So I downloaded the song on my phone and only had like five minutes before I had to sing it. I was so nervous! I really tried and I?m so blessed that they loved it.

Kidzworld: Wow, you are a quick study! Was making your first film what you thought it would be?

  • Charice: A lot of people ask if I would stick with acting and actually I love acting but between singing and acting, singing would be number one but I?m having fun. But, after ?Glee? and doing (a guest shot) in the Chipmunks movie then this movie, it made me more confident about doing more movies. Maybe I could be the serial killer in a horror film! I would love that!

Kidzworld: They would never guess you were the killer!

  • Charice: Poor victims. I don?t wanna be a victim.

?

Kidzworld: So you are a big horror movie buff then. You must have plans for Halloween.?

  • Charice: I still don?t know what/who I?m gonna be for Halloween but I?m planning to go to Universal (Halloween Horror Nights) and lots of haunted houses and all that.

Kidzworld: Your character Malia in this movie says she learned English by listening to music.? Is that true for you too?

  • Charice: Yes. I think most Asian singers or singers from other countries, it?s very common. Usually, all of us listen to music all the time and that?s how we learn English or other languages. I learned some Italian. That?s one way.

Kidzworld: Malia uses music to coach the Niko character in this film for his citizenship test. Do you think using music to teach other subjects is a cool idea?

  • Charice: I think that would be great. As a singer, when I was in high school, there was a lot of stuff I had to remember but every time I tried to memorize it and used music, I actually do remember stuff. It actually works.

Kidzworld: How do you feel about your Malia character? She?s very sweet.

  • Charice: The Malia character reminded me of Sunshine Corazon (her character on ?Glee?).? People ask ?What?s the difference??? The characters are kind of the same but what really got me into this movie was the story. I love the story and all of Kevin James? movies but this is the best. It?s funny and inspirational.

Kidzworld: ?Never Give Up? is a big theme in the movie and has been a theme in your life. What was the lowest point for you? Was it when you were 12 and lost the ?Little Big Star? contest on Filipino TV?

  • Charice: I think that was it. That contest made me sort of give up. I thought ?Maybe I?ll just go back to school and be a normal teenager going out with friends.?? I was in my room for two months. I was depressed.

Kidzworld: I can understand that. Due to YouTube you became well-known. How did you react when you were invited by Ellen to be on her show, then Oprah? ?Did you just jump up and down or not believe it or what?

  • Charice: It was Ellen first but I feel so bad. We didn?t have money so didn?t have cable TV and I didn?t know who she was! When they invited me, my mom said ?Who is she?? Then my friend said ?Oh she?s a huge American TV talk show host?. My mom was like ?You?re going to America?!? That was a huge thing.? Same with Oprah. It was like a Cinderella story.

Kidzworld: You are singing with Cheesa from ?The Voice? on the single ?I?m Not Perfect?. Are you guys buddies now?

  • Charice: Oh, actually not a lot of people know that her brother is my musical director. He was even before Cheesa joined ?The Voice? so we?ve been friends.

Kidzworld: Do you consider your sound more R&B now or what?

  • Charice: I love singing different types of music but I think if I had to choose it would be R&B and Pop.? I love creating new styles. Like I can turn a Frank Sinatra song into R&B. I love doing that kind of thing.

Kidzworld: That?s what you did with the ?Holly Holy? song in the movie.

Kidzworld: Whose music are you listening to most now?

  • Charice: I love listening to Frank Ocean. His music is my jam right now.

Kidzworld: Why will kids and teens really enjoy seeing Here Comes the Boom?

  • Charice: They will love it because it?s not just the kind of common comedy they would normally watch. Some of those get so cheesy but this one has comedy and action and it?s actually inspirational. Everybody can relate to this movie.

Kidzworld: What is next for you?

  • Charice: Right now I?m going back to New York to sing with Cheesa at Carnegie Hall and November 3rd I?ll have my concert in Hawaii then after that I?ll probably get back here to L.A. and do more music for an album. I just released the Asian version of my other album called ?Infinity?. We?re still looking for more music for the new album.

22 saved from sinking passenger boat in SF Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A passenger boat carrying nearly two dozen people started sinking near Alcatraz island in San Francisco Bay, but the U.S. Coast Guard said everyone aboard was safely rescued.

The 40-foot boat the Neptune hit an unknown object in the bay Friday night, leaving it with a 1-foot gash, Petty Officer Pamela Boehland said.

The craft began taking on water and sinking, she said. But a Coast Guard boat happened to be nearby, taking on board most of the Neptune's 22 passengers and crew and summoning another Coast Guard vessel that picked up the rest.

The boats took the passengers to San Francisco's Pier 39. There were no reports of injuries.

KGO-TV reported the passengers were celebrating a bachelor party when the accident occurred.

"We were only in the boat for maybe about 20 minutes or so," Matthew Rice, the party's guest of honor, told the station. "We were coming around Alcatraz checking it out and all of a sudden it was like boom, just like a big jolt and the next thing we knew the Coast Guard boats came in and got us off."

The station says the Coast Guard is trying to get the water out of The Neptune and will tow it back to port.

The Neptune's website, which advertises it as a "floating wine tasting room," says it holds 42 passengers for wine tasting.

Internet Business Marketing Methods | Global News

Internet Business Marketing Methods photoThe internet is a great place for people to start the business of their dreams. Online businesses are cheaper to run than standard retail businesses because operating methods are generally low-cost, and internet businesses have very little overhead expenses. Internet business can contain a great deal of products and information without the expense necessary for standard businesses. An internet business can be operated at home, and marketing an internet business has many low-cost options and methods not afforded to regular business owners.

Marketing methods are numerous, but not all methods of internet marketing are known to internet business owners. Low-cost internet marketing methods are available to internet business owners, and these methods are easy to implement. These low-cost marketing methods make it simple for anyone with an internet business to make that business a financial success. An internet business owner doesn?t have to be a corporate giant in order to receive the internet marketing it deserves.

For internet businesses and websites to obtain the highest search engine rankings, they must receive an adequate amount of internet traffic. The more the traffic, the higher the ranking. When marketing a website and looking for low-cost methods, this seems like an unfair disadvantage. Internet business owners seeking more traffic submit their websites to search engines in order to increase traffic. If search engines won?t list websites high upon their lists when traffic is low, how can internet business owners receive the traffic they need in order to gain higher search engine rankings and a chance at success? This is a marketing nightmare for those looking for low-cost marketing methods. Link exchanges are the answers to those wanting low-cost internet marketing and high search engine rankings.

Internet business owners looking for low-cost internet marketing should seriously consider becoming involved in link exchange opportunities.Exchanging links with other business websites is not just a low-cost marketing method, exchanging business links is often free. There are websites where those wishing to exchange links can find compatible link partners also interested in low-cost and free marketing through increased website traffic.

Once internet business owners are receiving the necessary website traffic in order to achieve high ranking search engine status, they should submit their internet business website to all of the major search engines. Search engine submission and marketing is low-cost and often free through search engine submission services. Website owners using these services are generally asked to place a link to the website submission service on their website. With proper keyword density and meta tags, business websites will achieve higher rankings on major search engine lists. Marketing a business website through low-cost and free online services is an effective and intelligent method of internet business promotion.

Squeezing ovarian cancer cells to predict metastatic potential

Thursday, October 11, 2012

New Georgia Tech research shows that cell stiffness could be a valuable clue for doctors as they search for and treat cancerous cells before they're able to spread. The findings, which are published in the journal PLoS One, found that highly metastatic ovarian cancer cells are several times softer than less metastatic ovarian cancer cells.

Assistant Professor Todd Sulchek and Ph.D. student Wenwei Xu used a process called atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study the mechanical properties of various ovarian cell lines. A soft mechanical probe "tapped" healthy, malignant and metastatic ovarian cells to measure their stiffness.

"In order to spread, metastatic cells must push themselves into the bloodstream. As a result, they must be highly deformable and softer," said Sulchek, a faculty member in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. "Our results indicate that cell stiffness may be a useful biomarker to evaluate the relative metastatic potential of ovarian and perhaps other types of cancer cells."

Just as previous studies on other types of epithelial cancers have indicated, Sulchek also found that cancerous ovarian cells are generally softer and display lower intrinsic variability in cell stiffnesss than non-malignant cells.

Sulchek's lab partnered with the molecular cancer lab of Biology Professor John McDonald, who is also director of Georgia Tech's newly established Integrated Cancer Research Center.

"This is a good example of the kinds of discoveries that only come about by integrating skills and knowledge from traditionally diverse fields such as molecular biology and bioengineering," said McDonald. "Although there are a number of developing methodologies to identify circulating cancer cells in the blood and other body fluids, this technology offers the added potential to rapidly determine if these cells are highly metastatic or relatively benign."

Sulchek and McDonald believe that, when further developed, this technology could offer a huge advantage to clinicians in the design of optimal chemotherapies, not only for ovarian cancer patients but also for patients of other types of cancer.

Making Sudoku puzzles less puzzling

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? For anyone who has ever struggled while attempting to solve a Sudoku puzzle, University of Notre Dame complex networks researcher Zoltan Toroczkai and Notre Dame postdoctoral researcher Maria Ercsey-Ravasz are coming to the rescue. They can not only explain why some Sudoku puzzles are harder than others, they have also developed a mathematical algorithm that solves Sudoku puzzles very quickly, without any guessing or backtracking.

Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz, of Romania's Babe?-Bolyai University, began studying Sudoku as part of their research into the theory of optimization and computational complexity. They note that most Sudoku enthusiasts use what is known as a "brute force" system to solve problems, combined with a good deal of guessing. Brute force systems essentially deploy all possible combinations of numbers in a Sudoku puzzle until the correct answer is found. While the method is successful, it is also time consuming.

Instead, Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz have proposed a universal analog algorithm that is completely deterministic (no guessing or exhaustive searching) and always arrives at the correct solution to a problem, and does so much more quickly.

The researchers also discovered that the time it took to solve a problem with their analog algorithm correlated with the difficulty of the problem as rated by human solvers. This led them to develop a ranking scale for problem or puzzle difficulty. The scale runs from 1 through 4, and it matches up nicely with the "easy" through "hard" to "ultra-hard" classification currently applied to Sudoku puzzles. A puzzle with a rating of 2 takes, on average, 10 times as long to solve than one with rating of 1. According to this system, the hardest known puzzle so far has a rating of 3.6, and it is not known if there are even harder puzzles out there.

"I had not been interested in Sudoku until we started working on the much more general class of Boolean satisfiability problems," Toroczkai said. "Since Sudoku is a part of this class, it seemed like a good testbed for our solver, so I familiarized myself with it. To me, and to a number of researchers studying such problems, a fascinating question is how far can us humans go in solving Sudoku puzzles deterministically, without backtracking -- that is without making a choice at random, then seeing where that leads to and if it fails, restarting. Our analog solver is deterministic -- there are no random choices or backtracks made during the dynamics."

Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz believe their analog algorithm potentially can be applied to a wide variety of problems in industry, computer science and computational biology.

The research experience has also made Toroczkai a devotee of Sudoku puzzles.

"Both my wife and I have several Sudoku apps on our iPhones, and we must have played thousands of times, racing to get the shortest completion times on all levels," he said. "She often sees combinations of patterns that I completely miss. I have to deduce them. Without paper and pencil to jot down possibilities, it becomes impossible for me to solve many of the puzzles that our solver categorizes as hard or ultra-hard."

Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz's methodology was first published in the journal Nature Physics, and its application to Sudoku, appears in the Oct. 11 edition of the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

Bad Cripple: Rocking the Cradle: On Parenting and Disability

On September 27 the National Council on Disability released an important document: Rocking the Cradle: Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities and Their Children. I spent most of last night reading the report. Nothing I read was surprising to me because many of the barriers and blatant bias described in detail I experienced first hand. Here is the link:?http://www.ncd.gov/publications/2012/Sep272012/ The NCD Executive Summary states: The goal of this report is to advance understanding and promote the rights of parents with disabilities and their children. The report provides a comprehensive review of the barriers and facilitators people with diverse disabilities?including intellectual and developmental, psychiatric, sensory, and physical disabilities?experience when exercising their fundamental right to create and maintain families, as well as persistent, systemic, and pervasive discrimination against parents with disabilities. The report analyzes how U.S. disability law and policy apply to parents with disabilities in the child welfare and family law systems, and the disparate treatment of parents with disabilities and their children. Examination of the impediments prospective parents with disabilities encounter when accessing assisted reproductive technologies or adopting provides further examples of the need for comprehensive protection of these rights. The report detailed twenty finding and made many recommendations. Below are direct quotes from the report?s twenty findings. ? FINDING 1: There are few accurate and comprehensive sources of information on the prevalence of parents with disabilities. FINDING 2: The child welfare system is ill-equipped to support parents with disabilities and their families, resulting in disproportionately high rates of involvement with child welfare services and devastatingly high rates of parents with disabilities losing their parental rights. FINDING 3: Parents with disabilities who are engaged in custody or visitation disputes in the family law system regularly encounter discriminatory practices. FINDING 4: Parents with disabilities who are involved in dependency or family proceedings regularly face evidence regarding their parental fitness that is developed using inappropriate and unadapted parenting assessments. Resources are lacking to provide adapted services and adaptive parenting equipment, and to teach adapted parenting techniques. FINDING 5: Prospective adoptive parents with disabilities face significant barriers to adopting children, both domestically and internationally. FINDING 6: People with disabilities face significant barriers to receiving assisted reproductive technologies (ART), despite its importance for many people with disabilities who want to procreate. FINDING 7: Personal assistance services (PAS) are a crucial support for many people with disabilities but usually may not be used to assist them with their parenting activities. FINDING 8: Parents with disabilities face significant barriers to obtaining accessible, affordable, and appropriate housing for their families. FINDING 9: Many parents with disabilities face barriers to traveling with their families using paratransit services. FINDING 10: Parents with disabilities have significantly less income and more frequently receive public benefits. FINDING 11: People with disabilities, especially women, face significant barriers to receiving proper reproductive health care. FINDING 12: Parents and prospective parents with disabilities face a significant lack of peer supports. FINDING 13: Social service providers regularly overlook the parenting role of their consumers. FINDING 14: Formal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C Early Intervention (EI) programs and other non-Part C early intervention and prevention model programs are an appropriate service option for many children of parents with disabilities. FINDING 15: Parents with disabilities involved in dependency or family law proceedings face significant barriers to retaining effective and affordable legal representation. FINDING 16: Centers for Independent Living (CILs), with appropriate training, can provide services to parents with disabilities. FINDING 17: Despite limited funding and little national attention given to parents with disabilities and their families, a number of programs and support services have begun to emerge across the nation; they must be replicated nationally to provide consistent capacity to support parents with disabilities and their children. FINDING 18: The impact of disability on the integrity of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) families has been utterly neglected by professionals in the fields of law, policy, and research. FINDING 19: Federal legislation, similar to the Indian Child Welfare Act, must be enacted to address the systemically disparate treatment faced by parents with disabilities throughout the country. FINDING 20: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) reinforces the rights of people with disabilities to create and maintain families. These finding are not exactly ground breaking but when listed together are a devastating reminder of the significant barriers people such as myself encounter when they want to start and maintain a family life. When I read the report last night I thought why did I not read about this in the news. I did a quick online search and found many groups support the NCD findings. All applaud the report and consider it an important document, among them The Council For Exceptional Children, Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Alaska Governor?s Council on Disabilities and Special Education, United Cerebral Palsy and multiple Independent Living Centers too numerous to mention. I am listing just a small fraction of the disability groups that praised the NCD report. Conspicuous by its absence is a single major news outlet. Well, not really. One newspaper in the nation mentioned the report?the Sacramento Bee. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal did not even use the report as filler nor did a single newspaper in any major city in the country. The Huffington Post?not a word. It is as though the report was issued within the vacuum of space. Sadly, this does not surprise me one bit. My son and the ADA came into existence within two years of each other. As he has grew I saw how the ADA failed to gain any traction?that is the ADA was the law of the land but there was no social mandate to follow the law. This led my son to conclude at a young age no one cares. Why would he say this? Read the findings above. He and I experienced many of the above findings. Not all but many. So in the process of coming of age my son learned a lesson no father wants his child to learn?no one cares. As he grew older he would often say ?Dad, the ADA is bull. Lip service is paid to the law. You and I are the only people that care?.? He was largely correct. Of course some people care but this out of the norm. In my experience most people will politely listen to others who state there is a need for wheelchair access or a lift on a school bus or an elevator or a ramp or a curb cut etc. Most will agree such access is the ideal. At some point however there will be an awkward pause or silence. Someone will mention a tight budget, another will bring up the words I have learned to dread??reasonable accommodations?. When this happens I know access is a lost cause. And this, the complete lack of social demand for access, is what my son learned by the time he was in first grade. As I fell asleep last night, I thought not much has changed aside from the law, a law most Americans consider somehow different from other civil rights legislation. ?????

Major Patent Case for Monsanto (MON) to Go Before the Supreme ...

The patent system isn?t quite broken. But it?s in need of some serious updating. And the next five years or so of patent litigation will indicate how our current legal system adapts (or doesn?t adapt) to new technology.

Several questions are currently unanswered when it comes to patent law.

Like, what counts as a true innovation? And what sort of ideas can you actually ?own??

The answers will have big impacts on all of our lives. After all, a patent system that?s too rigid stifles innovation. But one that?s too loose can hurt profits, giving companies little incentive to create new ideas.

Finding a middle ground isn?t easy, either. As technology becomes more advanced, patent decisions are getting increasingly complex.

Here are two examples?

Patent Case #1: Myriad Genetics

Myriad Genetics (Nasdaq: MYGN) developed a revolutionary test that can determine a woman?s genetic predisposition to breast cancer by checking for mutations in two specific genes.

Myriad has a patent on this test. But some argue that this particular gene is a natural feature of the human body, one Myriad shouldn?t be able to patent. Then there?s the fact that Myriad?s patents allow it to charge high prices for its test, blocking out low-cost competitors that could otherwise help more people.

Of course, like I mentioned above, if Myriad couldn?t profit from its patents, it might never have made the discoveries in the first place.

In August, Myriad received a court decision from the Federal Circuit that, for the most part, declared Myriad?s patents valid. The court?s main reason was that ?isolated? DNA molecules don?t occur in nature.

Patent Case #2: Monsanto

Monsanto (NYSE: MON) is an agricultural science company that makes seeds for different crops, including genetically modified strains. The products are enormously popular. For example, Monsanto?s soybeans ? which are modified to be especially tolerant to pesticides ? accounted for 94% of the U.S. crop last year.*

Of course, when you plant a seed, you end up with more seeds. And saving and planting those the following year is how farmers have operated since the days of the Fertile Crescent.

The problem is, when you buy a Monsanto seed, you can?t plant the next generation of seeds without paying Monsanto.

One farmer, Vernon Hugh Bowman, is challenging that notion ? arguing for the right to use second-generation seeds without buying them from the company.

Obviously, this isn?t an open-and-shut case. There are levels of murky legal interpretations to consider. And to complicate matters more, Bowman wasn?t just buying Monsanto seeds. He was buying from a centralized grain elevator that happened to contain Monsanto seeds, along with others.

On the flip side, while some people don?t like the idea of genetically modified foods, Monsanto?s technologies have boosted agricultural yields significantly. It?s helped the industry grow to $13.5 billion in annual sales.

But can you really patent a living plant, not to mention its offspring?

The Supreme Court?s ruling will have obvious implications for the agricultural industry. But the ruling could also set important precedents that will reverberate throughout our economy.

For instance, it could affect a concept called ?patent exhaustion.? This determines whether a patent holder can maintain its rights over a technology after it?s been sold, or if its rights were exhausted by the sale.

The smart money is on Monsanto winning this case. That was the decision of the appeals court. The Obama administration supports the decision. And the current, business-friendly Supreme Court will likely go the same way.

On such merits, keeping an eye on dips in Monsanto shares ahead of the decision could generate some profits. But the longer-term effects on your portfolio ? and your life ? could be even greater.

Ahead of the tape,

Matthew Weinschenk

*We understand many people see Monsanto as an evil, corporate overlord out to destroy food. We don?t get into that here. We?re talking about the future of patents. So please, spare us your comments on Monsanto.
