Joss Whedon Talks Avengers 2

While it's a bit too early to start pestering Joss Whedon with tons of Avengers 2 questions, reporters are taking advantage of the fact that he's in Toronto promoting Much Ado About Nothing, and they're, well, pestering him with tons of Avengers 2 questions. Yesterday Whedon spoke briefly about James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy, and now today he briefly teases The Avengers 2 by talking about the direction he's taking with the story.

He tells Vancouver.24hrs, "The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me." Whedon also told Reuters that the sequel was still in its "story stage." adding, "But I've been working on it pretty much from about an hour before I said, 'Let's make a deal.' It just caught fire with me.?We're hard at work. We would like to be not as rushed as we were with the first one."

What's nice about Whedon being the so-called "Godfather" of Marvel's Phase 2 initiative is that you can just tell the guy has incredible passion for this stuff. He doesn't stop working; doesn't stop creating. He admits to being a workaholic, but you get a sense that he has to be one -- it's in his blood. He knows this is the greatest opportunity he's ever had, and he's taken hold of it by Loki's horns. The man is on a mission, and fans should be lucky they've got Whedon in his prime with an army (read: Disney and Marvel) backing him instead of taking stuff away from him.?

When it comes to his involvement in the rest of the Phase 2 movies (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy), Whedon joked,??Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don't want to be is the guy they dread, who's going to come in and say? - here, Whedon affects a pompous British accent - ?'Oh, well I have the power to say change this.' I'm not that.??

We'll see how much Whedon is in Phase 2 when the first of those films, Iron Man 3, hits theaters on May 3, 2013.
